I've been told to cut my hair because it's way too long, and to straighten it because curls look ugly. I've been told to wear more makeup, to wear less makeup, not to wear certain clothes because they don't look sexy or feminine enough, to dress more casual, to dress less casual, not to work out so much since a slightly toned body doesn't look feminine (right, because I'm growing a penis at the gym), to gain some weight, to lose some weight, to grow some boobs (how about growing some brains?), to get a bigger butt, to get a smaller butt, to change the way I workout to prevent getting big legs, not to run because it's the "wrong" exercise to do, to drink (more) alcohol, not to be so sensitive, not to be so emotional, not to care so much, not to joke around so much, to joke around more, to be more serious, not to be so loud, not to laugh so much, not to be such an introvert, to be more confident, not to talk to men (wow!), to stop caring for the animals and the planet, to eat some steak because it's unhealthy to only eat grass (best advice!), not to read so much, to stop informing myself about what's going on in the world because it's easier and more convenient to know less, to get a "real" job and ignore my dreams, to stop travelling because it's a waste of time and money, to do what everyone else is doing, and not to love so much.
I could go on like this for hours.
These are just a few examples of things I have been told by strangers, friends, ex partners and family members.
I'm pretty sure all of you have had similar experiences.
And we really wonder why so many of us struggle to be confident and love themselves?
We really wonder how so many struggle with negative body image, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, suicidal tendencies and all kinds of mental illnesses when we treat each other like that?
Long enough have we been teaching each other that we're not okay the way we are.
How about accepting each other while offering our help to guide each other out of our misery (if necessary)? With love, not judgement.
We all love equality, justice, kindness, etc.
Embody what you believe in. ⚘
